Kikoti
Tented Camp - Tarangire (Tanzania)
|
Location:
Tarangire National Park,
famous for the huge and beautiful Baobab trees with nighttime opening
flowers that await pollination by enormous nectar seeking bats, and vast
herds of Elephant (over 3000 utilize this eco-system's resources) that
chew the pithy bark to gain the valuable moisture content.
Kikoti is our private
sanctuary of some 10,000 acres right in the middle of this migration
route bordering the National Park, We are unique in being able to
observe both the dry season migration towards the Tarangire' s waters
AND THEN the reversal, as this eco-systems wildlife turns around and
disperse out over 20,000 sq kms of surrounding Masailand as the
opportunity of light sporadic rains fall in November- January. |

Accommodation:
Kikoti Camp is named after a
nearby, mile long stretch of Kopjes. These ancient boulders
command views of epic proportions.
To the north, the Rift Valley
Escarpment and Ngorongoro Highlands rise above Lake Manyara, to the
east are the Simanjiro Plains, calving grounds to the wildebeest
herds.
To the north and east Mountains Kilimanjaro and Meru are seen
on clear days. Immediately to the west Tarangire National Park - the
Tarangire eco-system and the pastoralist Masai on whose land we
operate being the focus. |

Activities:
During the dry summer
months of June - November huge herds of wildlife travel vast distances
from the south and East to Tarangire to take advantage of the
permanent waters of the Tarangire River, the sight of several hundred
elephant young and old frolicking in the shallow muddy waters after
several long days across the parched Tarangire hinterlands is a sole
inspiring sight. Gerenuk, Lesser Kudu are
all local specialties to this dry, remote, region, and are obviously
followed by a myriad of predators. We experience no crowds, no long
drives - just wilderness Africa and ethnic culture. The emphasis
is on wildlife, culture, walking and observing behavior. We seek out
rock paintings, walking along elephant paths to water holes.
We climb rocky outcrops to view sunrise
or sunset, to just to rest and stand in awe. We drive at night to seek
out rarely seen nocturnal animals. Hides have also been erected
overlooking water holes - another exciting way to view wildlife. |
