Kusini Camp, Southern Serengeti National Park - Tanzania

Location:

Serengeti is arguably Africas premier Game Park. The sheer volume of its wildlife is staggering.

More than a million and a half wildebeest live here, as do quarter of a million zebra, almost half a million gazelles, and thousands of attendant predators.

The Serengeti is superb cheetah habitat, boasting the largest population in Africa, and is one of the few places where it can be considered a common animal.

The camp is located in the Hambi ya Mwaki-Nyeb Kopjes in the south central Serengeti in the western area near the border with the Maswa Game Reserve. The camp lies carefully couched in an outcrop of large boulders (or Kopjes).

The actual site was chosen because of the views, the unusual location and the all-year proximity of game which is due to easy access from the camp to several different types of habitat - short grass plains, rocky outcroppings and acacia bush / woodland.

The camp is a 15 minute drive from its own airstrip.

Accommodation:

Built in and around a large kopje, the camp offers spectacular views across Tortillas woodland situated on the edge of the short grass plains.

The camp comprises of 12 double tents scattered around the kopje with the mess tent and common area as the central feature.

Privacy between tents is guaranteed as they are at a substantial distance from each other and are generally concealed by a tree or kopje.

The tents face in different directions giving different views from the other tents although the general direction of the camp is south. Spectacular sunsets and sunrise can be viewed from the kopje within the camp.

Game Viewing :

By far the most famous and spectacular event is the annual migration of Wildebeest from the north. With the Wildebeest come Zebra, Thomson's Gazelle and the full range of predators. This takes place during December to March.

However, the mass movement of the migration can be influenced by many factors including the unpredictable seasonal nature of the rainfall. The seasonal changes influencing the vegetation changes which in turn influences the movement of animals.

The Southern Serengeti is also known for its resident Cheetah, Hyena (both Spotted and Striped) and the Bat-eared Foxes. The birdlife in the vicinity of the camp is both varied and extensive, harboring species that have not been encountered on the circuit in the other camps.

Short informative wilderness walks can be organized if personnel are available. These walks are of about ten kilometers duration and expose the guest to the basic principles of a safari in Africa.

Only qualified guides are used. There is no pre-safari booking for the wilderness walks as they are contingent on available qualified staff.
