The 37 traditional canvas tents in unfenced Governors Camp, all have private verandahs overlooking either the winding Mara River or the sweeping Masai Mara plain. Shaded by forest trees, the accommodation is spacious, with comfortable double or twin beds, ensuite bath rooms with hot and cold running water and flushing toilets.
Everything at Governors Camp is under canvas, with a dining tent for evening meals and a bar tent, softly lit by the glow of candles and lamps, as there is no electricity except at the camp office. Lying in bed on a moonlit night the magic of Africa embraces guests, as a herd of elephants softly browses its way through the camp or a group of hippos parties by the river. Masai guards ensure that guests are undisturbed by too close encounters with the prolific game in the area.
Governors Camp is the camp made a household name on Big Cat Diaries, and some of the experienced guides here worked with the team filming.
Whether guests hope to see the big cats from the series or all of the Big 5 they will not be disappointed as the three game drives a day take in a prolific amount of game sightings, in an uncrowded and unhurried way that gives guests time to learn about the animals and the environment.
Bush walks taken in a nearby private concession just outside the main reserve give an added dimension to the whole experience and end with a bush breakfast or sundowner cocktails in a beautiful setting.
Governors Camp is the place to come for a well-run African safariexperience that focuses on great game viewing with enough creature comforts to make it a relaxing vacation.
