Madikwe is one of the largest game reserves in South Africa and one of the most successful wildlife relocation programs in the world! The other major advantage of the Madikwe Reserve is that it is a Malaria Free Safari destination. It is conveniently located only 3 hours drive from Johannesburg, which makes it even closer than the Kruger National Park. The Madikwe reserve covers 75,000 hectares and is Big 5 territory. Madikwe has one of the largest Wild Dog populations, adding to the excitement of your game drive. Madikwe has 66 mammal species and approximately 300 bird species.

The vegetation and landscapes in Madikwe are diverse giving varied experiences within the reserve. It is possible to have a full 5 or 6 night Safari at Madikwe. It is a great option to combine a Madikwe safari with a beach holiday, either in Mozambique or the KwaZulu Natal Coastline. Madikwe also combines well with Cape Town, giving you the best of both worlds.

Madikwe has some of the finest luxury African safari Lodges available. There are a variety of accommodation options within the Reserve. It is a great family friendly destination, highlighted by the advantage of being Malaria Free. There is real African romance at Madikwe Hills or Etali Safari Lodge. Stunning views, and baths under the stars. One of our preferred partners More Hotels operates Madikwe River Lodge with an exceptional level of luxury, service and expert guiding.

Madikwe is also one of those rare exceptions where the local community is involved in the reserve. There are lodges like Thakadu River Lodge and Buffalo Ridge that are community run. These are luxury retreats and the standard of service and hospitality is on a par with anywhere else in the Madikwe Reserve. Conservation here is of paramount importance. The idea is to preserve a unique wilderness area of Kalahari thornveld in a remote section of the South African safari landscape at Madikwe.
