Unspoilt nature and superb diving are the main attractions at Rocktail Bay Beach Camp, one of Wilderness Safaris’ Adventure camps set in coastal forest and ancient dunes a short walk from a deserted sandy tropical beach. On South Africa’s KwaZulu Natal Coast with the Maputaland marine Reserve just offshore, the camp is perfectly placed for fantastic scuba diving, snorkelling and turtle watching. Beach walks and picnics, quad bike adventures, forest hikes are just a few of the ways to explore and enjoy this natural paradise, or relax beside the swimming pool and drink in the silence punctuated only by birdsong.

The 17 tented suites are spread up the side of the dunes among shady trees. Higher rooms have views over the trees to the ocean, and are a slightly longer walk from the main camp, while lower rooms are enfolded in the tranquillity of the coastal forest. All are built on wooden decks with a private verandah and ensuite indoor bathrooms, comfortable big beds cooled by ceiling fans and serene rustic decor. Seven are family units with two bedrooms and a shared bathroom and the main camp also has a playroom with children’s activities to keep little ones entertained.

Friendly staff help you fill your days with activity, perhaps a romantic excursion to freshwater Lake Sibaya and its resident hippos, snorkelling in the calm waters of Lala Nek, exclusive diving in small groups from the accredited dive centre, or joining a night time turtle drive helping monitor eggs being laid or baby leatherback turtles hatching (book ahead for this popular activity if visiting between October and March). The 20 minute walk from camp to the beach meanders through unspoilt forest, emerging onto an expanse of deserted golden beach, ideal for picnics and play in the warm Indian Ocean. During the winter months humpback and southern right whales visit the protected waters and dolphins are a year round attraction. Cultural visits to the local Zulu villages allow guests to experience the rich heritage of the coastal clans.

A stunning remote setting, friendly service and exceptional marine activities make Rocktail the perfect place to escape into nature in comfort.
