Found in northern Kenya the Samburu National Park is one of the lesser known reserves in the country. It is a little off the beaten track and not as busy as some of its more famous neighbors. The natural serenity found here owes itself to the inaccessibility the Samburu has had for many years.

The Uaso Nyiro River flows through Samburu National Park providing much needed sustenance to the very arid land. The river attracts a wide variety of wildlife and up to 350 bird species have been spotted. Lion, cheetah and leopard are found here as well as elephants, buffalo, hippos and the Nile crocodile! There is an abundance of plains game and some species have specially adapted to the dry conditions.

There are some beautiful accommodation options at Samburu National Park for those that are looking for something a bit different and to get away from typical tourist spots. Larsens Camp is a luxury tented camp offering a distinct African Safari experience.

Joy’s Camp and Saruni Samburu are operated by Cheli & Peacock. Joy’s Camp overlooking a large natural spring is an intimate tented camp with 10 luxury tents and breathtaking views. Saruni Samburu, perched on a spectacular viewpoint has only 4 luxury suites and overlooks several waterholes.

There have been a few famous names that are attached to Samburu National Park. Joy’s Camp named after Joy and George Adamson who were conservationists. They raised Elsa the Lioness (where Elsa’s Camp gets its name) made famous by the movie Born Free.
