The Tarangire National Park is not as famous as some of its neighbors but is a great addition to the Northern Tanzania Safari Circuit. If you are driving to Ngorongoro Crater or the Serengeti it is often used as a stopover for a night or two. This breaks the journey, as the roads in East Africa are not of the highest quality which makes driving conditions tough.

Here you generally find yourself on Safari away from the crowds. Tarangire is famous for its herds of Elephants and ancient Baobab trees. It is also well known for its high concentration of game and fantastic bird life. During the dry season animals congregate around the only water source in the park (and the source of the Parks name) – the Tarangire River. Although the park covers a massive area of 2,600km’s – with only one or two night stays, guests generally don’t venture from the Northern corners of the park. Tarangire offers some exclusive accommodation options.

We have featured some of these magical places in our Suggested Tanzanian Itineraries. Luxury, exclusive, tented, lodges, remote, and even treetops! Olivers Tented Camp is located in the South of the park, away from usual accommodation in the northern parts of the park. At Olivers you can enjoy a walking safari! Tarangire Treetops as the name implies, is perched high up in the age old Baobab and Marula Trees. With beautiful views and an adventurous, exotic feel!

One of our preferred partners Sanctuary Retreats operates Sanctuary Swala. Built to eco-friendly standards this intimate tented camp offers luxury and wide views of the Tarangire grasslands beyond! We can tailor an itinerary to suite you Safari style or have a look at our Tented East African Romance for great ideas. If you look through our Tips and Information pages you will find the best time to travel.
