Victorian elegance with a modern interpretation creates a home from home atmosphere at The Walden House, a beautiful boutique guesthouse in Cape Town’s quiet Tamboerskloof suburb. Within easy walking distance of the attractions of central Cape Town, it is a short drive away from the Waterfront, Table Mountain and Camp’s Bay and has secure off-street parking for three vehicles. A courtyard with small swimming pool and a manicured formal garden complement the characteristic Victorian architecture with its ornamental iron lacework, deep verandahs and balconies. Inside, modern conveniences such as wifi and air-con blend seamlessly with original fireplaces and big sash windows.
Each of the seven rooms and suites is different. Some open onto the garden verandah, where white roses twine up the supports and lavender hedges scent the air; others are upstairs looking out over Table Mountain or the city and harbour, and the spacious Honeymoon suite has direct access to the upstairs balcony with all its views.
All of the very comfortable rooms have safes, DSTV, tea and coffee facilities complete with cookies or muffins and bar fridges, and are light and airy with an understated palette accented by modern artworks. The extra little luxury of fluffy towels warm from heated towel rails in the marble ensuite bathrooms is very welcome in the cooler months.
Downstairs relax in the comfortable lounge with big sofas, light wood flooring and roaring log fire in winter. In the morning, light streams into the breakfast room where a good spread of fresh fruits, baked goods, cereals and yoghurts accompany the menu of cooked dishes. Friendly staff help plan out your day, whether you are visiting wine farms, going up Table Mountain in the cable car, touring on the double-decker sightseeing bus from the stop just down the street, exploring on foot or heading to the V&A Waterfront for shopping and a Robben Island tour. There is a wide choice of Cape Town’s best restaurants within easy reach and, after an excellent dinner, it’s a pleasure to return to the quiet, high ceilinged rooms of this welcoming home from home in Cape Town.
This active couple thoroughly enjoyed their African honeymoon which took them from Big Five territory in the Sabi Sands, up to Victoria Falls, out into the Cape Winelands, sight seeing in Cape Town with a final stopover in Johannesburg.
