Scented wafts of cinnamon and cloves pervade the spice plantations, and fat bunches of glossy, black vanilla pods are sold by the fistful in the local market, and yet this exotic island still has some untouched pockets of blissfully secluded beaches with crystal clear waters.

Breezers was built on one such beach, an idyllic hideaway for romantics with rooms furnished in soothing ivory tones. Cotton throws, carved furnishings and teak finishes all add up to create calming interiors perfect for a holiday stay. Different room categories give guests a choice but each one is in close proximity to the sea with the beach stretching out in front of them.

Food is a highlight at Breezers with two restaurants, The Tides and Salama Dining Room, The Sultan's Table and The Breakers Grill offering an array of tastes and flavours typical of the island cuisine with all its Arab influences. Seafood is plentiful and comes as fresh as it gets, while a Breakers barbeque is a memorable event.
Pampering too, is a priority, and the Frangipani Spa is decorated with sophisticated Swahili elements, with views of its beautiful setting among the trees. Thai and Balinese therapists are skilled at rejuvenating and soothing guests after days spent on a dusty, adventure-filled safari.

Expect to find all manner of water sports on offer too as well as a kite school - a first for Zanzibar. Kitesurfing, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing and pedal boats are on offer, while a trip to the coral lagoon for snorkeling is recommended. Most popular is the bike-snorkeling trip with a half hour ride to a beautiful spot and just over an hour to snorkel.

The island of Zanizibar is the ideal stopover on the way to Kilimanjaro or Arusha, the gateway to the Serengeti in Tanzania, and is only a short trip by plane from Dar es Salaam.
