Set close to the main gate of the park, Kapani is a 20-minute drive from Mfuwe Airport, which in turn is a 90-minute flight from the capital, Lusaka. The stylish accommodation includes eight standard suites and two Lagoon Houses – all sleeping two – and the brick chalets boast thatched roofs, generously sized living areas and walk-in mosquito nets, while the Lagoon Houses are more plush and features elegant furnishings and exquisite views. All rooms also have en-suite facilities, as well as high ceilings, overhead fans and large gauzed windows. The central point of the camp is the thatched main building with its bar, lounge area, and depending on the season, al fresco dinners can be enjoyed on the
terrace while the shady platform overlooking the lagoon is perfect for breakfasts and brunches. At the far end of the camp, a swimming pool provides welcome refreshment after a busy day of game viewing. And whether you opt for on-foot or driving safaris, the sheer scope of the area’s wildlife is awe-inspiring. Night drives are also on offer, and South Luangwa is in fact one of the few parks in the area allowing nocturnal excursions. These drives are done with a spotlight and one of the highlights here is the opportunity to see leopard during a night-time outing.
Regarded as the home of walking safaris, especially during the dry season, visitors to the park are spoilt for choice and can either go on morning guided hikes, or for more extensive foot safaris including overnight stops at some of the well-equipped bush camps nearby.
Featuring some of the highest concentrations of game in Africa, the Luangwa Valley is a must-see for travellers to Zambia, while Kapani Lodge is the perfect starting point for safaris in this area.
