Sossusvlei is located in the ancient Namib-Naukluft National Park. This Park includes the oldest desert in the world. One of the biggest attractions here are the massive red sand dunes, some reaching over 300 meters in height, (often referred to as Sossusvlei)! Visiting the area at sunrise or sunset ensures amazing photographic opportunities! One can’t forget Dead Vlei, often more photographed than the dunes themselves. For the ultimate experience soar silently above this magnificent area in an early morning hot air balloon safari. With only one lodge actually located within the Sossusvlei Park, the rest operate from private concessions adjacent to the Park. Daily excursions into the Park are a highlight from wherever you are based. Walking barefoot up these massive towering walls of sand to watch the sunrise, the silence and solitude enveloping you, is hard to beat! There are some unbelievable accommodation options in the Sossusvlei area. Our favorite operators like Wilderness Safaris and andBeyond have some of the most jaw dropping lodges.
Personal, sumptuous, intimate and organic, with the most unbelievable views over the vast desert stretching before you, Little Kulala is a dream come true. With views onto the dunes in the distance you can watch the colors of the desert merging from your roof top at Kulala Desert Lodge. If star gazing is your passion the resident astronomer at Sossusvlei Mountain Lodge will reveal all the secrets of the universe as you gaze up at the awesome constellations of the Milky Way.
Slightly further south you get the Namib Rand Nature Reserve and a world class retreat awaits you here in The Wolwedans Collection. Activities in this Nature Reserve are much the same as at Sossusvlei. They include game drives and walks, scenic flights and hot air ballooning. Desert adapted wildlife found here in consists of the majestic gemsbok, zebra, springbok and bat-eared foxes.
