Mahali Mzuri is Sir Richard Branson’s safari camp in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, north of Kenya’s famous Maasai Mara National Reserve. Situated about 240kms due west of Nairobi, the best way to access it is by plane from the city’s Wilson Airport. The flight takes one hour and is a beautiful, fascinating flight to the Mara North airstrip, where the camp does transfers. The 12 unique tents were designed and constructed by Kenyans and are not your average safari lodge. They resemble spaceships, and are extraordinary in their comfort and design – which is unsurprising, because Richard Branson is anything but ordinary.
The 12 tents, which cater to a maximum of 24 guests at a time, are each named after one of the 12 Maasai tribes in the conservancy and have breath-taking views down into the valley and the sprawling plains. Each tented suite sits on a raised platform to maximise on privacy and the view. They have an en-suite bathroom, sitting area and large game-viewing deck. The rates include meals and drinks, daily game drives, unlimited access to the Olare Orok and Motorogi Conservancies, visits to the local market, transfers from the Mara North airstrip, a laundry service and all taxes. There is also a spa treatment room, infinity pool and free WiFi.
There is plenty to occupy guests who can tear themselves away from their luxury suite. There are twice daily game drives and guided walks that will take you through the Motorogi and Olare Orok Conservancies, which both boast a wide variety of game. You can also take a guided tour to the local villages and learn more about the fascinating Maasai Tribe. After a busy day taking in the sights, guests can unwind by the infinity pool or indulge in a spa treatment before drifting off to sleep to the therapeutic sounds of the African bush.
