A beautiful unspoilt location in a remote corner of Zambia’s South Luangwa, Chamilandu Bushcamp brings guests close to nature for the ultimate authentic African safari, open in the dry season from June to November. The Bushcamp Company is the only operator in this pristine southern section of the park, with its waterways and oxbow lakes attracting a wealth of wildlife. Elephants stroll past the stilted tree-houses and the small size of the camp with no more than six guests at a time makes for a personal approach, enjoying bush walks and game drives with no other vehicle in sight. A comfortable hide allows for afternoons of uninterrupted wildlife viewing.
Understated elegance and bush luxury is the theme in the three stilted suites among the trees.
Beautifully thatched with woven reed sides, each is completely open to the river in front, cooled by gentle breezes, so that guests feel at one with nature. The big king size or twin queen beds are hung with sophisticated black mosquito netting and made up in gorgeous soft linen. The en-suite bathroom has plentiful solar-heated hot water in the showers and is also open to the view over the river bed, where the only eyes might be a hippos or elephant passing by. Don’t expect electricity or wi-fi at this genuine bushcamp, where the sounds of nature and the fresh air lull you to sleep.
The camp chef produces amazing gourmet meals, baked goods and snacks from his bush kitchen, served in the boma or dining area under the soaring ebony trees. Bush walks are a fascinating opportunity to get close to wildlife with the experienced guide, learning about animal behaviour and the small as well as larger creatures. Leopards, elephant, giraffes, buffalo, warthogs, baboons, impala and much more, including prolific bird life, are seen on afternoon and night game drives, the South Luangwa being known for its abundant wildlife (only the rhino is rarely seen here). When the river is at its driest, a pride of lion might wander past camp on the sand banks, Chamilandu offering a superb opportunity for the safari enthusiast to experience wild Africa up close and personal.
