Tucked away in the lush valley of the Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal is the world-renowned Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse. This comfortable country house hotel, which has been running for 10 years, is a gastronomic delight offering only top quality gourmet meals along with luxurious accommodation in its 11 beautifully furnished rooms. If you’re looking to escape the fast pace of city life to breathe in some fresh country air, taste some of the best food around, take in the sights of an exquisite mountain range and recharge your batteries, then Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse has the perfect recipe.
Owned by Richard and Mouse Poynton of Granny Mouse Country House fame, Cleopatra’s Mountain Farmhouse came about when they were on an overseas holiday experiencing the delights of top-class cuisine and its popularity. That’s when they came home and decided to start a foodie getaway of their own. With the farm being in the family since the 1940s, it’s extra special for the Poyntons and they’ve ensured that each and every guest is made to feel as welcome as if they were part of the family. This is why they’ve been made a member of the Best of KZN – a luxury owner-run hotel group.
Only about a 2 hour drive from Durban or a 5 hour drive from Johannesburg, an escape to Cleopatra’s Mountain Farmhouse is easy. Once you’re in the mountain kingdom with its awe-inspiring views and absolute stillness, you’ll immediately feel rested and recharged.
The menu at Cleopatra’s changes every evening and is swayed by the availability of the fresh produce in their thriving vegetable garden as well as from the local nearby village. Guests can look forward to a 7-course dinner every evening where the aim is for you to enjoy the finest, most delicious fare in a humble, relaxed environment. Richard, who has been cooking and preparing the meals for many years now, will always ensure that his guests are 100% satisfied. The large underground wine cellar also means that all meals are paired with the perfect wines mostly from around South Africa.
Invigorating mountain walks, horse riding, trout fishing and even helicopter rides are on offer in the area. Cleopatra’s is like a home away from home with its soft, comfortable furnishings and warm inviting atmosphere. Guests can browse the library, sit by the log fire with tea and cake or relax on the verandah taking in the spectacular views of the Drakensberg.
