A traditional tented safari camp in the Linkwasha concession of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, Davison’s Camp overlooks a permanent waterhole frequented by elephant and buffalo. One of Wilderness Safaris’ adventure camps, it offers an authentic and affordable safari experience in prime elephant country. Hwange is renowned for its vigorous elephant populations and its diversity of mammals, with over 100 different species to be found including lion and leopard. Relax beside the refreshing swimming pool or on the upper look-out deck in between game drives and enjoy superb views of wildlife, visit the local school or take a morning guided walking safari.
Offering the comforts without the frills, the eight tented suites and one family tent have all you need and are tucked in the shade of a grove of false mopane trees. A comfortable big bed is made up in soft linen, with panoramic views over plains and waterhole from the curtained tent sides. The cushy day bed is perfect for curling up with a book for an afternoon read and watching herds of wildebeest as they saunter through camp, and electric light gives a soft glow at night, when a hot water bottle is tucked into beds for a cosy night’s sleep. Screen doors open onto a private deck and the elegantly rustic en suite bathroom has plenty of hot water for showering, a vanity and flush toilet.
Exploring the plains and varied habitats, with the experienced guide allocated for your stay, unveils the secrets of the bush, tracking lioness and cubs or the elusive wild dogs. The guides’ knowledge brings the landscape to life, looking not just at the large mammals but also the smaller creatures and at the nocturnal wildlife on evening drives. All of the Big Five are still present at Hwange, but the black and white rhino are rarely to be seen, hiding in the more remote corners of the park. Back at camp delicious meals are served in the newly refurbished dining and lounge area, where guests relate the safari experiences of the day and relax with the friendly hospitality of the attentive staff.
