One of the original private concessions within South Africa’s Kruger National Park, Jock Safari Lodge combines modern luxury with an authentic feel of the pioneering days when the Jock of the Bushveld stories were written. Built by the author, Sir Percy Fitzpatrick’s, descendants, the lodge is in prime Big Five game viewing country on the confluence of two seasonal rivers, surrounded by trees and bird life. As well as two daily game drives, guests can enjoy walking safaris, visit ancient Bushman rock art, relax over an indulgent spa treatment or at the charming rock swimming pool. Twelve luxury thatched rooms make up Main Jock lodge, each with a spacious private deck including a plunge pool and a shady thatched sala with day bed, perfect for lazy afternoon siestas watching elephant families wander past and baboons frolicking in the river bed.
There’s an old-world feel to the airy bedrooms with mosquito netting canopies over the big beds and comfortable armchairs, the en-suite bathroom with big tub and outdoor shower, but modern comforts such as air-conditioning, telephone and minibar are all there. For families and small groups, self-contained, three bedroom Fitzpatrick’s offers an intimate safari experience with its own rock swimming pool, activities for children and friendly personal service. Game drives are the focus of the day with experienced guides tracking brilliantly to find the best wildlife sightings: lions, leopards, elephants, hippos, rhino and a host of other creatures large and small, each drive is an informative adventure, going off-road to get close enough for wonderful photographs.
During the winter season from April till October, adventurous guests can embark on Jock’s Explorer Camp, a two day walking tour experiencing safaris as they were in the old days, with luxury camping in a remote corner of this private concession and rustic meals prepared by a Shangaan chef over the camp fire.
At the lodge excellent food is prepared by the creative chefs, including a wide assortment of game, plenty of fresh vegetables and salads and decadently tempting desserts and baked goods.
Rustic luxury, unpretentious charm and genuine welcoming hospitality are the hallmark of this wonderful African safari destination.
