A classic tented camp in 1950’s style with lashings of luxury, Machaba Camp overlooks the Khwai River on the eastern edge of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Tucked into the riverine forest in the shade of tall machaba trees the independently owned camp is perfectly placed for leisurely viewing the wealth of wildlife that visit the river year round. Fly into the Khwai airstrip from Maun and get a birds’ eye view of the Delta, then explore the private concession on morning and evening game drives, take a peaceful mokoro ride along the water channels, then relax beside the swimming pool with a book and binoculars.

The ten en-suite tents may be classic in style but there is nothing old-fashioned about the immaculate furnishings, which would grace the pages of any decor magazine.

The big bed with top quality linen looks out over the private verandah at river views, a plump armchair invites leisurely reading and a gorgeous safari desk is reminiscent of Hemingway’s day. The ingenious ensuite bathroom has double vanities, shower and flush toilet with plenty of hot water provided by solar power, plus there are 220v plug points for charging batteries in each tent. The two extremely spacious and equally luxurious family suites comprise two bedrooms divided by a large lounge area and children of all ages are welcomed at the camp.

While there is plenty of wildlife viewing to be enjoyed from within the unfenced camp, with elephants , hippos and baboons sometimes strolling past tents, the early morning and evening games drives are the focus of activities, tracking down leopard or the elusive wild dogs, observing great herds of elephant or enjoying the prolific bird life around the delta. The winter dry season between June and October is considered the best time for big game viewing, but the wildlife can be sighted all year round and the best time for bird-watching is the green season from December until March.

Delicious meals and wine pairings at a communal table, helpful , friendly staff and an authentic but luxury safari feel make Machaba an excellent choice for those looking for a memorable Okavango Delta experience.
