A quiet and comfortable guesthouse in the green leafy Karen suburb of Nairobi, Macushla House is perfectly set up for a restful stopover before or after a Kenyan safari. Set in beautiful gardens filled with birds, squirrels and vervet monkeys, it has a lovely swimming pool and a home from home atmosphere in the eclectically furnished lounges, where a roaring fire is lit on cold evenings. Within easy distance of the Giraffe House, Karen Blixen Museum and David Sheldrick Elephant orphanage Macushla is also conveniently placed for Wilson airport where safari flights depart, and is a haven of peace in a busy city.

A warm welcome and friendly hospitality await whatever time you arrive weary from an international flight. With just six guest rooms it feels like arriving at a very comfortable family home with fresh coffee and cake on offer, hot water bottles tucked into beds and the owner’s dog and cat on hand to add to the welcome.

All the rooms are big and airy, furnished in colonial African style and plenty of charm, with blissful big wrought iron beds draped in gauzy netting, rich rugs in deep earth colours and efficient ensuite bathrooms. Fall asleep to the sound of cicadas and wildlife, and awake to birdsong as you tune in to the rhythm of Africa.

Relax over a hearty breakfast in the dining room or sip coffee out on the patio, the friendly staff make sure that you have a good meal even if you have an early start planned. The Karen district is safe to walk around with the famous Giraffe Centre  at an easy walking distance. The Macushla driver can also be booked to take you everywhere at a reasonable price, as well as doing the airport transfers. Wind down with tea and cake beside the swimming pool watching the entertaining antics of the vervet monkeys, and then enjoy a delicious dinner while trading stories and safari experiences with fellow guests.

The friendly professional staff and delightful tranquillity of Macushla make it an excellent, safe and very affordable choice when travelling through Nairobi on the way to a safari in Kenya.
