Secluded in the heart of the malaria-free Marakele National Park, Marataba is a luxurious sanctuary of suites crafted from canvas and stone, providing a refreshing escape from everyday stresses. Backed by the dramatic rich red cliffs of the Waterberg Mountains, the reserve encompasses 27 000 ha of lush plains dotted with cedar and yellowwood trees, vast clear rivers, huge cycads and tree ferns, and rich animal diversity.
Here you will find the world’s largest colony of endangered Cape Vultures consisting of over 800 birds, the full complement of large game species and big cats, as well as less-familiar plant, mammal and bird species.
Marataba comprises three exclusive offerings for guests, each providing a taste of the welcoming hospitality of the More family.
Marataba Safari Lodge
A central open plan lounge and dining area with free Wi-Fi opens up onto a swimming pool set among manicured lawns and indigenous trees. Each tent has double or single beds, a private deck, air-conditioning, an open-plan bathroom, outdoor shower, mini bar, hairdryer and in-room safe.
Childminders can be arranged and the attention to detail that is so evident in the surrounds, is clearly extended to the children with a variety of activities on offer.
Marataba Mountain Lodge
Marataba Mountain Lodge is reserved for guests over the age of 16 and has just 5 plush Eco Suites, catering for a maximum of 2 guests each.
Located in a private location clinging to the side of the mountain, Marataba Mountain Lodge’s suites each feature a king-size bed, en-suite shower, mini-bar and a private covered viewing deck with 180-degree views over Waterfall Valley. The pool area at this “Scandi-Safari” style Lodge rests naturally among the rocks and Wild Olive trees, offering privacy and intimacy yet close enough to enjoy the luxuries of the service and comforts that are catered for throughout.
Tabametsi Treehouse
Tabametsi Treehouse is the latest addition to Marataba and offers a secluded family or couples breakaway.
Set at the foot of a mountain, away from the other lodges, Tabametsi offers total privacy and exquisite uninterrupted views of the reserve from its 6m long private deck. The Treehouse is solar powered and features a bedroom, full en-suite shower room, dining and lounge areas built over two levels
Your days at the Marataba lodges will be filled with natural diversions. Guided game drives, water safaris, walks and trails take place morning and afternoon in search of the diverse species which call this place home. As a safari destination, Marataba is ideal any time of the year with the best months for bird-watchers being October to April.
Marakele National Park is the only savannah biosphere reserve in the world and boasts healthy populations of elephants, leopards, brown hyenas and lions as well as sable antelope, kudu, tsessebe, waterbuck, giraffe and zebra.
All of these luxuries and experiences can be found within easy driving distance from Johannesburg, approximately 3.5 hours. Whether travelling alone, as a family, or with that special someone on honeymoon or as a wedding party, Marataba embraces every guest with the same warm African welcome.
