The private land on which the Nkwali Safari Camp is located is blessed with an ebony woodland as well as open grass plains, so wildlife around the camp is plentiful. Game-viewing in the adjoining Mfuwe Sector is excellent, and is what earned South Luangwa its reputation as Zambia’s premier safari destination. Day game drives allow sightings of elephant, hippo, crocodile, zebra, Thornicroft’s giraffe, antelope, hyena, baboon, jackal, wild dog, caracal and lion roaming in prides of up to 30. Night drives are even more exciting, with good sightings of the plentiful but elusive leopard, shy bushbaby, honey badger and more. Birdwatchers are kept enthralled by over 400 bird species that proliferate here.

The game in this central Mfuwe Sector is relaxed, allowing for excellent close-up photo opportunities. Nkwali accommodates 12 to 14 guests in six spacious, airy A-frame chalets made of woven bamboo and thatch. The generous en-suite bathrooms have showers that open to the skies during the dry season. The bar area, on the banks of the Luangwa, is built around a huge ebony tree with fantastic views of the river and across to the park. From here guests can watch elephants crossing the river or bathing at the waterhole near the dining room. The dining room is a simple thatched structure beside the lagoon but most guests opt to dine alfresco on the open deck, under the trees beside the lagoon or the river or out in the bush! Activities include day and night game drives, walking safaris and boating, or guests can retreat to the swimming pool to refresh and recharge.

The laid-back luxe of Nkwali Safari Camp makes it a perfect family safari destination on the doorstep of the Mfuwe Sector, South Luangwa National Park’s most accessible and game-rich region.
