Nkwichi is set on a beautiful beach on the Mozambican side of Lake Malawi and it’s seclusion is such that there are no roads within 10 miles of the lodge – ensuring the kind of romantic remoteness that discerning travellers expect. It was built and designed to seamlessly blend in with the surrounding scenery – as well as the Manda Game Reserve, which surrounds the lodge – adding to the sheer African appeal of this bespoke destination. Nkwichi is the perfect hideaway on just about every level, and this property is enveloped by sandy beaches and rocky outcrops.
The intimate accommodation consists of four private chalets, two premier chalets and two separate houses for families and groups of friends. All units feature thatched roofs, exquisite four-poster beds crafted from local wood, and outdoor bathrooms boasting tubs meticulously carved into natural rock. Added to that, the showers are cleverly positioned under a canopy of trees – the epitome of African chic!
At the heart of the lodge, the communal areas comprise a set of central double storey buildings, which all offer expansive views over the lake. It’s here where guests can relax in peace and quiet for hours on end; or they can opt for the many activities on offer, which include swimming, snorkelling, sailing and kayaking.
VIsits to the local village and community projects are other highlights here, and it’s also possible to partake in assisted dhow sailing, as well as fully fledged safaris, bush walks, barbeques, guided walks and hikes, not to mention exploring the magnificent sandy shores…
In terms of cuisine, guests are spoilt for choice, with a range of freshly caught fish items on the menu guaranteed to please even the most discerning palates.
The necessity of helping previously war-torn Mozambicans get back on their feet – and to honour and conserve a precious piece of Africa – is addressed via the Manda Wilderness Project.
Nkwichi forms a vital part of this project and responsible tourism is the heartbeat of the lodge’s ethos. Every material uses was sourced locally and Nkwichi endeavours to continuously benefit and develop the local community.
