Explore Zimbabwe’s wild and remote Mana Pools National Park from the comfortable base of Ruckomechi Camp. One of Wilderness Safaris classic camps, open from April to November, its luxury tented suites overlook the wide Zambezi River where elephant and buffalo herds congregate on the river edge and the rare wild dog is often seen.  Away from the well trodden safari routes, Mana Pools is a completely unspoilt park where canoe and boat safaris as well as game drives discover abundant wild life and birdlife. Lounge beside the swimming pool or on the star-gazing deck to absorb the sights and sounds of untamed Africa.

The stone walled luxury tents manage to combine rustic charm and sophisticated style, using natural materials to blend into the landscape and soft sensual fabrics for reassuring comfort and cocooning. The big bed, made up in fine linen, looks out over a private deck to the river, and solar powered lighting gives a gentle glow in the evening as you soak in the en-suite bathroom gazing out at moonlight reflected in the water and listening to hippos laugh. Solar showers, both indoors and out, and flush toilet complete the ensuite facilities.  Another favourite relaxation is the secluded, scenic outdoor bath with a view, or sun bathe beside the infinity pool in between game drives and activities.

Elephants and hippos wander at will through camp but there is so much more to be seen with the experienced and enthusiastic guides, whether tracking wild dogs, or leopards, or taking to the river to get close to hippos, elephant and a vibrant array of birds. Night drives seek out the nocturnal animals such as civet and bush babies. There’s also catch and release fishing or a sunset cruise enjoying a gin and tonic as you float down the great Zambezi. All the camp staff make guests feel like part of the family and the generous meals are a delight, with excellent food beautifully prepared and served under the stars.

Idyllic scenery and superb game-viewing, as well as impeccable service, make Ruckomechi an ideal choice for an off the beaten track African safari.
