Authentic Africa with elephants is how guests describe Somalisa Camp, set deep in a private concession of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park. The park is known for its healthy population of elephants, several families regularly visiting Somalisa, hanging out by the waterhole and drinking from the splash pool only feet away from guests relaxing on the deck. A friendly family atmosphere is created by the experienced guides and friendly staff, so that guests feel at home in Africa, whether setting out at sunrise on a game drive, exploring on a bush walk or sitting around the campfire sharing stories of wildlife sightings at night.

The six luxury tented suites are spaced apart for privacy looking out over the waterhole or at the elephant trails passing through the camp. Spacious and elegantly furnished in old world safari style, with curvy dark wood bed, writing desk and night stands with lamps powered by solar electricity, the tent flaps open to an indoor/outdoor ensuite bathroom enclosed by a natural wooden screen and including showers newly converted from old-fashioned bucket to running hot water, vanities and flush toilet and elegant brass mounted mirrors reminiscent of a bygone age.

As well as the elephants, Hwange is renowned for its very varied wildlife with over 100 species of mammals and prolific birdlife. Lion, leopard, hyena and wild dogs are to be seen, as well as the rare sable and roan antelope. Enjoying sundowners in the middle of a herd of buffalo is a never to be forgotten moment. Returning from the evening game there is time for a hot shower before enjoying a first class dinner under the stars with an excellent menu skilfully prepared by the camp chef, including plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits. Guests eat together at a long table then sit around the camp fire for a few drinks, before being escorted to their tents by a ranger, in case of meeting one of the elephants wandering through camp to the waterhole.

For warm hospitality, excellent wildlife sightings and a genuine African safari experience, Somalisa Camp is a great choice as part of a journey through undiscovered Zimbabwe.
