An eco-friendly lodge set in the majestic wilds of the Namibian desert, Sossus Dune Lodge is an ideal stop for visitors to the legendary dunes of the Sossusvlei and exploration of the Sesriem Canyon. The only lodge located inside the Namib-Naukluft National Park, it gives guests the advantage of setting off long before the park gates open to witness the memorable spectacle of sunrise over the sand dunes, before any other visitors arrive. As well as the not to be missed sunrise drives, the lodge offers guided nature drives and canyon walks, night star-gazing and is also perfectly placed for self-drive excursions. Twenty five spacious round chalets on stilts spread widely out to each side of the main lodge,
linked by a raised wooden boardwalk that minimises the impact on the desert landscape. With wooden frames, canvas walls and thick thatched roofs they are reminiscent of an African village and have long views out either towards the dunes, or to mountains and Sesriem canyon. Simply furnished with big bed swathed in gauzy mosquito netting and comfortable loungers in the wide windows, ensuite bathroom with a good rain shower, double vanity and enclosed toilet, they are both comfortable and in tune with the environment. Tea and coffee facilities with a French press and cream from the minibar are a nice touch of civilization in the desert.<
The reason for coming here is the desert itself and the lodge’s guides impart their knowledge with enthusiasm. Not to be missed is the guided sunrise drive to climb the Big Daddy dune followed by a picnic breakfast laid out on a table in lonely state amid the awe-inspiring dune landscapes. Stunning photographic opportunities arise from this early start, recording Dead Vlei as a huge empty vista with not a soul in sight.
Back at the lodge relax during the heat of the day with frequent plunges into the refreshing pool before heading out for a sunset excursion to Dune 45, and then back for a well-cooked dinner under the stars as night cools the desert air.
