Thakadu River Camp takes its name from the Sotho (one of the local dialects) word for aardvark – just one of the myriad fascinating creatures that inhabit this unique region that lies along the Botswana border. Madikwe encompasses two ecological habitats and a richly diverse and rewarding game viewing experience – be your interest birds, flora, or larger species such as the black and white rhino, buffalo, lion, elephant, cheetah, leopard or wild dog. Highly trained rangers will guide you during morning and late afternoon bush encounters, experienced as they should be in open-topped safari vehicles.
If there is anything that Thakadu River Camp guarantees, it is an overriding sense of peace and immersion with nature thanks to its setting: a lush riverine canopy along the banks of the Marico river.
The thatched main lodge at Thakadu River Camp with its open-plan design is at the heart of the camp. It is here that visitors congregate to relax or enjoy a drink.
An Afro-Asian decor aesthetic is light and welcoming, characterized by a contemporary-classic fusion of natural stone, warm wood, metal, natural textiles and tactile rugs underfoot. Each of Thakadu’s twelve beautifully appointed canvas tented suites follow the same style, and extend outside with a private viewing deck. Four of these tents are family-friendly, each with an extra sleeper couch for children. Thakadu River Camp is part of the exclusive Madikwe Collection portfolio. It is also a proud member of the Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa association thanks to a unique partnership arrangement with the local Molatedi community, who own the development.
Thakadu River Camp delivers the epic safari fantasy for the entire family and, at the same time, goes further by creating an intimate experience driven by a passion for great service and a true love of the South African safari experience.
