The Retreat, situated in Northern Selous, is a luxurious 12-suite hideaway that offers guests complete seclusion in the heart of the African bush. The Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected wildlife sanctuary in Africa and is also known to be one of the “secrets of Africa”, boasting pristine wilderness and an utterly unspoiled environment. The wildlife viewing is second to none, with elephant, black rhino, lion, leopards, wild dogs, giraffes, hippo, crocodile and over 400 varieties of birds to be spotted in and around The Retreat. Guests get to share in a genuinely rare and intact African ecosystem.
To get there you would fly 70 minutes from Dar es Salaam. The Retreat’s private guide will provide a special meet and greet service at the Sumbazi airstrip and transfer guests, tying it in with the first exciting game drive to the lodge.
The Retreat offers four different styles of accommodation, our Eagle Hill Suites, River Suites, Lion Suites and Hippo Hill. There are 12 spacious, tented suites under palm-thatched roofs, which are private and have been constructed to correspond with the surrounding habitat. The tents are made from heavy duty canvas and mosquito nets, which can be opened right up so guests can experience the sounds, breeze and full-view of the environment. Each suite has it’s own private outdoor deck with stunning copper bathtub, and has been built using natural materials and precious stones, blended to create a sense of comfort and luxury using the principles of Feng Shui.
The Retreat allows guests to tailor make their stay, offering a choice of two inclusive activities per day, ranging from game drives, safari walks and hikes, escorted boat excursions, line fishing, birding, hiking tours and spa treatments. For a small extra charge guests can enjoy a sleep out on the deck, aptly named the Love Nest, or in our elegant Fly Camp Experience.
