The eight split-level timber-and-thatch chalets all have uninterrupted river views, with sturdy screens keeping bugs out when you opt to open the massive stacking doors, which form the chalets front panel. Upstairs, the opulent bedroom, dressing area and lounge area are decorated in true colonial style, and it’s perfectly possible to imagine yourself as the star of a movie like Out of Africa when you stay at this landmark lodge. Downstairs, the massive bathrooms include showers as well as ball-and-claw baths – and nothing can compare to soaking in a bubble bath by candlelight while listening to the wildlife sounds through the screen between you and the river. Lodge activities include sunset boat cruises with plenty of game-viewing and birdwatching opportunities, thanks to the lush vegetation, as well as cultural visits to nearby villages. The main areas consist of a comfortable lounge, internet room and an impressive library, as well as the ample veranda where high tea is served every afternoon. Meals at the River Club are unforgettable and apart from scrumptuous full English breakfasts on the immaculate veranda, poolside lunches are perfect on a hot day, while the evenings are events in their own right.
Afterwards, a round of croquet, fuelled by Pimms or gins and tonic, are pretty much compulsory and a great way to end the day in this heavenly location. No wonder the lodge is such an ideal venue for weddings, with the beautifully manicured lawns just adding to the allure. Golden African sunsets, hippo sightings from your bedroom as well as a secluded river deck complete with loungers and hammocks ensure an out-of-this-world experience at the River Club.
