Perched on stilts among shady marula trees on a large island in the Okavango Delta is Tubu Tree Camp, a luxury tented camp run by Wilderness Safaris along eco-tourism principles. Well placed for encountering diverse wildlife in an area frequented by big game and prolific bird life, the winter floods allow for exciting game viewing from the water by boat. The drier summer season sees extensive exploration of different habitats on game drives and leopard are often spotted in the riverine forest edging the permanent waterways. Friendly and helpful staff, excellent meals and a swimming pool with a view add to the luxury safari experience. The eight luxury tents are set on wooden platforms linked by raised walkways to the main dining and lounge tents. Each has a private deck looking out over the floodplains, where you might see elephant or buffalo passing by. The newly renovated tents are very comfortable and spacious. Big beds festooned in mosquito nets, comfortable armchairs and rugs on the polished wooden floors give a feeling of permanence and the ensuite bathrooms have both indoor and outdoor shower and a lovely stone basin. A large family unit consists of two adjoining tents, each with their own bathrooms, and linked by a shared lounge. The raised hide a short distance from the camp is perfect for extra game-viewing between game drives and can also be used for thrilling sleep-outs to experience the sounds of the wild at night. In this private concession night drives with a spotlight are possible, and leopard sightings though not guaranteed are a distinct possibility. Mokoro canoe trips, motor boat safaris, catch and release fishing are all fascinating winter activities and in summer the shady canopy of the trees and the cool waters of the swimming pool are perfect for afternoon siestas. Generous meals include home-made breads and desserts, and elegant three course dinners alternate with traditional meals in the boma with lamb cooked in an open pit under the stars, perhaps visited by hyenas or hippos. A wonderful place to get close to nature and experience the diversity of an Okavango Delta safari.
