Q&A WITH AFRICA TRAVEL SPECIALIST, LISE KARGAARD

Tell us about your most memorable moments on safari?

I have so many memorable safari experiences, from being stuck in the mud in the middle of the Masai Mara for hours, seeing my first kill, being charged by a rhino, to sitting in the pool when a herd of elephants came to drink out of it. But my most memorable experience was with a friend in Hwange, sitting around the fire drinking Gin & Tonic, then suddenly an elephant walked right into camp and stood between our chairs. The ranger and camp manager, who were sitting with us, calmly picked up their rifles and told us to sit very still. The elephant sniffed about, pushed over a chair and eventually left, as quietly as it arrived.

What are some of the extraordinary experiences you’ve created for your guests?

Well there are the fun things like private weddings in the bush and sleep-outs, helicoptering guests into remote destinations for a picnic, out-of-the-box proposals. But nothing beats the personal connection. Meeting a child and having the guest offer to sponsor their education. Having guests meet a young underprivileged ballet group and sending them a full uniform kit. Guests bringing a suitcase of educational supplies to a remote village. These experiences change lives.

What was your first post-lockdown local travel experience?

My son and I walked from Muizenberg Beach, along the boardwalk, to Dalebrook tidal pool for a swim. Then ice-creams from the famous Ice Café in Kalk Bay. We rounded off the day with a wander down to the seals and colourful boats at the Kalk Bay harbour before heading back. I will never forget how glorious it was to be allowed outside in the sunshine and how everyone was laughing and smiling at each other.

Africa is waiting.
