Q&A WITH AFRICA TRAVEL SPECIALIST, ILZE FOX

As travel resumes, which types of clients are reaching out to you?

It’s a mixed bag and I can’t really quantify it by age group or income level. But the one thing that links these travellers is their sense of adventure. They’re emerging from their cocoons not fearful of what the outside world holds, but excited about getting out and exploring once again. I’m currently talking to a honeymoon couple who are raring to explore Africa’s remoteness, as well as a 70-something safari veteran who can’t wait to return. The spirit of Africa is alive and well and we can’t wait to share it with you.

Where was your first safari?

I enjoyed my very first safari at Phinda, and it was a phenomenal trip. I didn’t really know what to expect – I thought we’d drive around for maybe an hour, see some animals and then head back to the lodge. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that we’d be enjoying a much more immersive experience. The ranger was fantastic and he would tell us stories about elephant dung and the toothbrush trees. The game density is high so there was something to talk about at every turn. Perhaps the most magnificent of these are the sightings of the elusive cheetah which seems to be a frequent occurrence here. Phinda was my introduction to the safari world and I’ve been back three times since. Chat to me if you’re considering a visit of your own!

Why do you do what you do?

It’s simple. I want people to experience the beauty and majesty of Africa for themselves. I’ve been on countless safaris before, but it never gets boring. I still enjoy the thrill of seeing something special, or hearing an interesting story from the rangers. So often our clients email us after their trip to say that it’s been a life-changing experience, and I want to say “I told you so!” Come and see for yourself. Africa will change your outlook on life, challenge you to think outside of your bubble and remind you of what’s important in life. If you’re thinking of doing a safari but you don’t know where to start, please get in touch.

Have you changed anything in your personal life since the start of Covid?

I am currently training for my first triathlon. I felt that I needed to challenge myself, and although I’ve always been an active person, this journey is pushing me out of my comfort zone and it’s just the best feeling. I’m training for three disciplines – swimming, cycling and running – and that keeps it interesting. No two days are the same. The past year has been a challenging one for the travel industry, and this has provided me with the positive outlet I so desperately needed. The best part is that my two young kids can see the benefits of leading an active lifestyle, and they often ask if they can come for a run with mom!
