mara-crossing

For anyone interested in booking a last-minute African safari – you’re in luck! Andy and Claudia Stewart from Bushtops Camps are reporting an extraordinary event in the Masai Mara and Serengeti Migration –

“If you can, stop what you are doing and make a last minute booking to come to the Masai Mara or Serengeti. Why? Because a once in a lifetime phenomenon has seen the annual wildebeest migration turn around and return to our grasslands, creating a wildlife wonder-show. Since this is happening in the offseason, you can have the Mara and Serengeti largely to yourself, enjoying spectacular safari viewing at off-season rates.

As to why the herds have turned around, no one can be certain, but it seems to have something to do with the rains. Most of the herds had crossed into the Serengeti by mid October, but when it started raining in the Mara, a few turned back. Then came the extraordinary part: they were followed by a mass U-turn, as big herds re-crossed the river. Our ranger, Charles Mwaniki, has lived and worked in the Mara for 20 years, but has never seen such a dramatic reversal: he and his fellow rangers believe, however, that now they have returned, they will stay for a few weeks more.”

To sweeten the deal even further, those booking three nights or more at Mara Bushtops (five nights or more at Bushtops hopping) will be offered a complimentary balloon trip!
